In Québec, a consumer who purchases a soft drink in a refundable container automatically pays the retailer a 5¢ deposit. The latter is refunded when the empty container is returned, regardless of who the merchant is because it is not necessary to return refundable containers to the same retailer from whom it was purchased. Obviously, if the container is not returned, the deposit is forfeited.
